Finite Element Analysis of Hot Rolled Steel I-Beams subject to Rigid Bearing

Donald Allan Robertson

Abstract

Although the rules for the design of beams subject to severe concentrated patch loading (bearing) have been in place for many years, the American rules seem to suggest higher capacities than the Australian rules. In order to better understand the strength behaviour of this connection, a 3D finite element analysis was conducted on a range of hot rolled steel I beams in order to examine the load displacement characteristics of this joint to failure and to identify shortcomings in the standard calculation rules.
