Design and feasibility for commissioing T2 at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy

Zebedee Learoyd

Abstract

The University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)
operates an extensive hypersonics research facility. The current facilities are used for
sophisticated research, though due to this fact they are restricted from use by inexperienced
personnel. The university currently has a free-piston shock tunnel, T2, that is in disrepair.
This report provides a summary of a feasibility study and design proposal to recommission
the system at ADFA to be used for diagnostic testing and training purposes. The system
has been designed to operate with a control system which signicantly increases the safety
features on the tunnel. This report outlines the general approach for the investigation and
describes select factors that were investigated during the design of the system.
