Failure Analysis and Modification of AMTDU Maxibox

Abstract


Air Movements Training and Development Unit (AMTDU) RAAF, developed a small aerial delivery method which is effective for supplying small airdrop loads up to 25kg, using a rotating container design. The current Maxibox design deploys four wings, which cause the container to autorotate, decreasing descent velocity and stabilizing the free fall, however, the current design has not proven successful to the desired extent. A literature review was conducted to investigate the failure modes present and their occurrence.An investigation into reducing failure mode incidence was achieved through static testing of the Maxibox. An evaluation of various design improvements was made, and modifications implemented to the existing design. The project yielded several successful design improvements, which will increase the Maxibox survivability rate.
