Sunshield Design for Infrared Satellites

Abstract


The aim of this thesis is to develop a suitable design for a sunshield that is substantially lighter than those that are currently in operation, without reducing its effectiveness in being able to provide a thermally stable region for the satellite to operate in. In order to do so, a systems engineering approach was undertaken in which problems with existing infrared sunshields were analysed, followed by the establishment of a reference mission, an identification and conceptual development of alternative designs and a conclusion that resulted in a comparison between the new designs and an evaluation of the most effective shield, relative to the reference mission.
