Near-Field Seawater Antenna Range

Abstract


Underwater communications is a growing field, with several predominant methods, such as ELF electromagnetic communication, acoustic, and optical communication. However, none of these methods offer the same high data rate achieved above water with typical electromagnetic data transfers. This report summarises characterisation of a seawater antenna range using a linear insulated antenna, which allows for the investigation of VHF electromagnetic propagation in seawater. It also outlines the development of an H-field probe and its positioning system, which were integral to the characterisation of the range.
